What a simple school lunch change teaches us about learning

This report from ABC News outlines a simple shift happening in some Australian schools, where kids are encouraged to play first, then eat instead of the traditional eat-then-play routine.

Seems like a small change, but it’s one with huge impact.

The “No-Brainer” We Missed

We’ve been telling kids: “Sit still, eat lunch before you can play.”

The outcome being kids scoffing their lunch or only eat half of it because they aren’t wired that way. They want to move and they need to move.

Flip it and suddenly they finish play and magically, they’re hungry (so they actually eat), they’re calmer and they’re ready to learn

The ABC article highlights improved behaviour, focus and even academic outcomes when schools make this switch.

This Isn’t About Lunch

This is about something bigger, just because something’s always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it works and definitely doesn’t mean it works for every child.

Meet Aandi Moment

What if we started tossing more of these “normal” practices up in the air…and seeing where they land?

Because when we do:

  • Kids move more → they focus better
  • Kids feel better → they behave better
  • Kids learn better → without forcing it

A simple shift, but a massive impact.

This isn’t about playtime, it’s about mindset. We need to stop asking: “How have we always done it and start asking “What actually works?”

Because whether it’s lunch schedules… or learning itself…it’s not about doing things differently for some kids. It’s about doing things better for all kids.

When we get that right? Everyone wins.
