There have been times when I have been on the phone with utility providers where I have to admit initially it can be hard to tell the difference. The voices have expression!
For us, with the audio description software we have developed, I have been blown away by the quality of the voices that are available for us to offer clients for this text-to-speech (TTS) functionality.
The technical term is Neural TTS (NTTS) which produces the most natural and human-like text-to-speech voices possible. Standard TTS voices use concatenative synthesis.
Heard that term before? I hadn't. In layman terms it is a technique for synthesising sounds by linking short samples of recorded sound (called units) together.
Technology has come such a long way and when we get the choice over not only accent, male/ female but also how much emotion is in the voice it really does make it hard to tell the difference when integrated well into all types of online spoken digital services.
